Good blog!

At this rate, there may be no trades at the deadline this year.

Maybe it's just me, but it seems like the standings are more of a cluster this year than they usually are. I'm not really sure why, but it's kind of a mess.

i'm with ya...this run they're on only balances out the troubles they had the first half of the season...they still need to go on a strong run if they hope to make the playoffs...

that said, they're points-percentage is .521, good for 5th in the division and tied for 11th in the conference.

This. The fact that the east is so bad almost makes it good? The bottom feeders are all middling out, even against each other. Some of these teams have to make a run. So far Toronto is that team. There's no reason the Sabres can't be another, but the same argument can be made about Tampa, Detroit, even the Islanders.

At least this last doesn't feel as bad.

Gotta think Colorado is going to sell something. Arizona is always buying bad deals. In the east though, not so much.

sabres are

5 points behind bruins with 4 games in hand
1 point behind panthers, with 2 games in hand
3 points behind flyers with a game in hand

leap frog these teams , then you can set your sight on catching the leafs, sens and rangers

of course if you get 3 points in the next 6 games, your looking at a top 3 pick

In the last 11 games, they're at .700 according to Paul Hamilton. (7-3-1)

Problem is those 3 losses are against teams they really needed to get wins against. Flip the Tampa and Toronto losses with the wins against Nashville and Winnipeg and things would look even better.

I still don't get why we're trading Gionta...he's fifth on the team in scoring, on pace for his best season in four or more years and makes the players on his line better...

it's a head-scratcher, imo

Like I said in the lat blog, Georges is god awful. With both the eye, standard stats and advanced stats. He stinks.

A month ago, or 3 weeks

I said you have about 10 good teams
2 crappy teams

18 teams you can put all in a hat and pull them out for rankings

should make for an interesting finish this season and I am curious how many of these "average" teams can knock out a contender in the playoffs

many were saying that about bogo and kuli...not that either are out of the woods, just saying sometimes our perception is skewed

I mean, on the other hand, if you look at players like you would a stock you want to sell when the price is high so you can get the best return. Sure, it might still tick up a bit, but if you think this is as much as you're going to get out of it you want to get the best ROI. If the Sabres think they can make the playoffs then they keep him. If not, they trade him. I think if we went 0-3-0 in these last few the tune would be different about his future here.

Agreed and im 99% certain its a reflection of the draft class. Mckenzie flat out called Patrick a #2 centre

that I can agree with...but Gionta just scored crucial goals in the last two consecutive wins with his linemates contributing as well...yet in light of that, and without taking into consideration that he just might make his fellow third liners better, people want to trade him...

personally, I think this team's secondary scoring takes a step back if he's traded

It's a seller's market because of the cluster of teams. In a normal year, you'd get a second. If you can somehow get a first, you take it. That said, I think iginla is probably the only first rounder caliber trade

it seems like every time they put themselves in a position to really make some sort of an impact in the standings, they fail miserably. It's starting to get old.
